Current transformer toys have many uses on farms, especially in modern, automated, and intelligent farms. They are important components for power monitoring, power safety, and energy efficiency management.The main electrical equipment that needs to be monitored on the farm
Irrigation pumps:
These pumps irrigate farmland or supply water to livestock sheds and use high-power motors. Monitoring pump current can help track energy consumption during irrigation and identify issues like idling pumps and pipe leaks .

The current data collected by the current transformer toys is usually connected to the energy consumption management system or controller for real-time monitoring and analysis.
Integration with a PLC system :
Connect the secondary side signal of the current transformer toys to a PLC controller or data acquisition module. Use a current sensor with a 4–20mA or 0–5V output.
Use a current transmitter paired with the current transformer toys to convert the signal, which is then read by the PLC analog module.
The PLC system can monitor and control equipment status, such as automatically shutting down a pump motor for overload protection.
Smart meters and IoT communications:
Wireless IoT current transformer toys combine Split current transformer toys with communication modules such as LoRaWAN and NB-IoT to achieve wireless data transmission.
This device requires no wiring and can upload collected current data directly to a cloud platform.
Types of current transformer toys suitable for farms

Split current transformer toys (also known as clamp on current transformers):
Split core current transformers have an open core that can be clamped onto existing cables like a pair of pliers. Their key advantages are ease of installation, requiring no removal of the primary busbars, and live installation without disrupting equipment.
This makes them ideal for retrofitting existing farm distribution systems, such as adding monitoring circuits to running water pumps without shutting down the system.
Split core current transformers are also compact, making them easy to install in the confined spaces of distribution boxes. Therefore, split core current transformer toys are a highly practical choice.
Solid core current transformer:
also known as a ring type current transformer, the core is a closed ring. Solid core current transformers are often used in newly built power distribution systems.
The busbar or cable is passed through the transformer when the equipment is installed. In newly built power distribution cabinets on farms, Solid core current transformers can be used in conjunction with digital meters.
Turn off the power before installation:
the busbar must be removed or the cable disconnected before the transformer can be installed, which is not as flexible as the Split core.
Farms usually use solid core current transformer toys during initial construction or equipment updates to obtain higher measurement accuracy; in renovation scenarios where power outages are inconvenient, Split core-type alternatives are more often used.
DIN-rail core current transformers are based on closed-circuit current transformers but feature a DIN-rail mounting base. Encased in flame-retardant PC plastic, they offer excellent insulation, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and shock resistance.
The DIN-rail base allows for quick and easy installation, allowing the CT to be neatly fixed to the distribution box rails for consistent and aesthetically pleasing wiring .
DIN-rail current transformer toys are suitable for monitoring branch currents within farm distribution cabinets. Within a barn distribution box, a row of DIN-rail current transformer toys can be installed in various functional areas (such as lighting, fans, and heating) to enable centralized monitoring of power meters. The CT’s enclosed plastic housing is highly adaptable to the environment and can withstand ammonia and dust in the barn, ensuring long-term stable operation.
Alternatively, a Rogowski coil transformer is also an option.
This flexible coil can be easily wrapped around thick busbars or multiple parallel conductors, allowing installation without disassembling any busbars. It’s ideal for retrofitting and monitoring high-current circuits, such as farm mains.
The Rogowski coil outputs a voltage signal, requiring a dedicated secondary transmitter to convert it into a current or voltage output (e.g., 5A, 1A, or millivolt-level signals). It offers a wide measurement range, reaching up to several thousand amperes.
