What is the difference between closed type transformer and split core type?
Closed-type transformers and split-core transformers are two commonly use devices for measuring current in power systems. The main difference between them lies in the internal structure and working principle.
Closed type transformer:
A closed-type transformer is usually a complete toroidal core with a conductor for measuring current passing through a central hole in the core.
The toroidal shape of the core allows the transformer’s induction coil to completely close around the current conductor. According to Faraday’s law, and therefore the law of electromagnetic induction when a current passes through a wire, the surrounding magnetic field is present. The wire induces a voltage signal.
This voltage signal passes through the secondary coil. of the transformer, ultimately used to measure current.
Closed transformers have the advantages of simple structure and convenient installation, and are suitable for real-time monitoring and measurement of power systems.
Split core transformer:
Split core transformers usually consist of a main transformer. core and several auxiliary cores.
Since the primary core is a toroidal core, the secondary core is realize by multiple individual placements. So the core is in the center hole of the primary core.
Each independent core is surrounded by a pair of windings, one of which is in series with the main conductor and the other is used to output the current signal.
Split-core transformers measure current by passing the primary conductor through the main core while passing the secondary conductor through each individual core.
Because each individual core senses current independently, relatively accurate current measurements are obtained.
Switching core transformers are generally more suitable for use in complexes. Power systems are therefore better than enclosed transformers as they provide more accurate current measurements and can accommodate a wider range of currents.
Generally speaking, closed-type transformers are suitable for general current measurement needs, while open-type transformers are more suitable for occasions with higher current measurement accuracy requirements or more complex power system structures.
