FAQ

What is the difference between current transformer and voltage transformer

FAQ | Mar 09,2023

Current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) are both types of instrument transformers used to measure electrical values in power systems. However, their primary functions differ as follows:

  • Current transformers are used to measure the current flowing in a circuit. They are designed to step down the high current flowing through a conductor to a lower value suitable for use in measuring and control equipment.
  • Voltage transformers are used to measure the voltage across a circuit. They are designed to step down the high voltage across a circuit to a lower value suitable for use in measuring and control equipment.

In summary, current transformers measure current, while voltage transformers measure voltage. Both types of transformers are used to provide accurate measurements of electrical values in power systems for protection and control purposes.
